The majority of older adults have fond memories of playing outdoors as children – catching fireflies on humid summer nights, building secret forts in the woods, riding their bikes to a friend’s house. These are the things of which childhood used to be made. However, trends have shifted over the last 30-40 years, and children no longer seem to be engaged in activities that once seemed to define childhood. With the advent of video games, the proliferation of computers in every home, and the introduction of the internet, childhood is much more sedentary than it used to be.
On average, children are involved in rigorous physical activity less than 15 minutes per day and moderate physical activity for less than 45 minutes each day. Additionally, children spend approximately 20% of their waking hours watching television. For the last 20 years, childhood obesity has been on the rise while physical activity levels have declined. Finding ways to ensure children are active can be a frustrating and daunting task for parents. However, some youth fitness tips may help parents initiate and maintain a healthy level of physical activity for their children.
