This week Hackney Council resolved to establish a Council-run lettings agency and improve support for private renters. You can read the full text of the motion here.
With average private rent in Hackney at £2,125 per month, letting agents charging up to £500 every move, and some landlords hiking up prices, renting can leave many people in vulnerable situations. We know this is an issue for many Stoke Newington residents and that alongside extortionate prices, conditions in the private rented sector can also be very poor, with tenants reluctant to complain for fear of being evicted.
A Labour government would make three-year tenancies the norm and ban letting agents’ fees for tenants. But we need to make sure we're doing everything we can in Hackney to improve conditions in the private rented sector.
We want to get a large group of private renters in Hackney together so they can share their experience and help the Council make conditions better.
