Season's Greetings!

Season's greetings to all Stoke Newington residents!

With the Christmas markets, carols and mulled wine organised by the SNBA, late night shop openings and a lovely Christmas tree on Church Street, it has been a particularly festive period in Stoke Newington this year and it's been great to see all these initiatives so well supported by local residents.

It's been another busy year for the three of us, and we'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support during 2012. We look forward to continuing to work with you all over some of the challenges we face locally in 2013.

Council services over Christmas and New Year: There are some changes to refuse and recycling collections, opening times of council services and parking enforcement - all the details are here.

Update from the last Community Advisory Panel meeting

At the Community Advisory Panel meeting last week the local Police team updated us on the operations currently taking place to target anti social behaviour on the High Street and Church Street associated with the night time economy and street drinking. These are issues that are repeatedly raised by residents so we were pleased to see a coordinated attempt to tackle the problems and the team are having an impact.

The priorities were also set for the months ahead - focussing on cycling on the pavement; anti social behaviour on Smalley Road Estate, and the High Street.

We also discussed recent changes to policing at the meeting. Each ward in London currently has its own Safer Neighbourhoods Team which is responsible for neighbourhood focused policing. The details of our team are here. At the CAP it was confirmed that we have a new Sergeant for the team, though currently shared with two other wards. We understand that the plan for next year is for our team to have its own dedicated Sergeant again.

We've had serious concerns about any reductions to the numbers in Safer Neighbourhood Teams in Hackney - and Hackney Labour has pledged to campaign against any reductions. We understand that the Metropolitan Police say they want to increase the number of PCs committed to neighbourhood policing. This is to be delivered by moving officers from the back office, cutting middle managers such as inspectors and sergeants and continuing to recruit PCs from PCSO ranks.  We'll continue to keep you updated on these changes as we hear more.
