The Living in Hackney Scrutiny Commission is currently carrying out a review of how the Council manages the impact of late-night entertainment in the borough. Cllr Susan Fajana-Thomas is a member of this commission.
As we know, Stoke Newington has a vibrant night time economy, but at times this can also cause problems for local residents who are disturbed at night and experience the increases in litter and mess on the streets.
This has been a long standing issue for us as ward councillors, and we argued strongly in favour of a Special Policy Area (like Shoreditch has in place already) a few years ago.
The Commission is looking at how the night time economy is managed across the borough, (including the impact of the Special Policy Area in Shoreditch), what the relative costs and benefits of a vibrant nightlife are, and whether interventions are needed to maintain a positive balance between the businesses, visitors and local residents.
It is important that local residents feed in their views as part of the review, as well as those using the night time economy. You can complete the brief survey online here.
