Consultation on Hackney's libraries

Hackney Council is consulting on its Library Strategy for 2011-2015. Full details of the consultation are available here.

The consultation is asking for your views on libraries in the Borough, and in particular on opening times across the 8 libraries and the range of services provided at each location.

Hackney will be keeping all 8 of its libraries open - in the face of huge funding cuts from central Government - and opening hours across the Borough will remain some of the longest in the country.

In terms of changes to Stoke Newington Library, the Council is proposing to slightly amend opening hours so that it remains open at the times that are most useful to our residents. This proposal is based on evidence gathered on the use of the library.

The proposed opening hours are show below against the current opening hours, which are shown in brackets:

- Monday: 10am - 8pm (current opening hours are 9am - 8pm)
- Tuesday: 10am - 8pm (9am - 8pm)
- Wednesday: 10am - 8pm (9am - 6pm)
- Thursday: 10am - 8pm (9am - 8pm)
- Friday: 10am - 6pm (10am - 8pm)
- Saturday: 10am - 5pm (9am - 5pm)
- Sunday: 1pm - 5pm (1pm - 5pm)

If you have any comments on this on any other aspect of the Library Strategy do not hesitate to contact us. The consultation closes on 27th June 2011.

Dog chipping this Saturday

The Council has been working with the Dog's Trust to provide micro chipping and training events. The next of these is this Saturday 16th April in Butterfield Green from 11am.

We have received quite a few complaints about out of control dogs – particularly around Somerford Grove where the newly planted trees were damaged, and on Stoke Newington Common.

Hackney Council is now in the process of designing a consultation to find out the views of dog owners, dog walkers and residents on introducing Dog Control Orders. The vast majority of dog owners in Hackney look after their pets responsibly.

However, there are a minority who allow their dogs to act aggressively. Dog Control Orders are powers that councils have that can designate areas dog exclusion zones and require dogs to be kept on leads in certain public places.

Do you have any strong views on this issue? Let us know and we’ll advertise the consultation as soon as it’s live.

Clissold Park update

At the Stoke Newington Neighbourhood Forum, last week there was an update on the Clissold Park project. This is a Council and Heritage Lottery Fund project to develop the park and restore Clissold House.

The areas of the park which have been closed whilst the works are taking place will be re-opened this Spring. The works have involved an extended play area, a wheels park, a multi use games area, restored animal and bird enclosures and an improved bowls pavilion.

The works on the house are due to finish late summer.

There is more information online here and you can sign up for newsletter updates.

Bar A Bar update

Bar A Bar recently put in an application to extend its hours of operation and quite a few residents made representations objecting to this given there have been big problems in the past with noise and anti social behaviour related to the venue.

Susan spoke at the Licensing Sub Committee a few weeks ago alongside Beatty Road residents against the application. There was a good result as the committee refused the extension of Bar A Bar’s hours. Thank you to everyone who helped out with this.

As the weather is getting much warmer, we know there are likely to be problems with outside noise from venues. Please remember to log any disturbances with the noise team on 020 8356 4455 or online here. We work closely with council officers and the Police to try and get appropriate enforcement action taken against venues that are causing big disturbances for local residents. This can at times be a lengthy and frustrating process, but please do get in touch with us if there are issues near you.
