New cycle lane completed

The cycle lane at the bottom of Palatine Road is now complete.

This is part of the new Olympic Cycle Route, funded by the Olympic Delivery Authority to promote safe and sustainable access to the Olympic Park. The previous cycle lane at the end of Palatine Road had fallen into disrepair and had been neglected.

We worked with residents to help improve the new scheme. Those living nearby said they wanted to see more planting and landscaping around the site as many children play here, and as a result the design was amended and considerably improved. The cycle lane has been moved and raised to encourage a shared space that both cyclists and pedestrians can use.

  1. Why the persistence in creating 'shared spaces' for pedestrians and cyclists? These are two disparate groups, travelling at different speeds.

(Even when two channels are provided, side-by-side, the cycling 'lane' always gets used by pedestrians in preference to their own half - a strange phenomenon, that must be something to do with red and green paint.)
