Dangerous dogs and dog fouling

We are aware of several incidents involving dangerous dogs that have happened locally in the past month. This is particularly bad on Smalley Road Estate where the play equipment is being repeatedly chewed and ruined by dogs. We’ve asked for the new neighbourhood wardens to patrol the areas where this is reported to be happening.

Under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, it is an offence to allow a dog of any breed to be dangerously out of control in a public place:

  • If you find a dog you believe to be dangerous and it is an emergency call 999 immediately

  • If you see a dog and have information about the behaviour of the dog, a description and any information about the owner, call the Council’s Animal Welfare department on 020 8985 5930 (Office hours) or 0844 482 8337 (out of hours)

  • You can also call the local Safer Neighbourhood Team on 07879 603037

We also have picked up a lot of complaints about dog fouling. The Council is already taking action to reduce the problem - the whole of Hackney is covered by a Dog Fouling Control Order which means that any offenders who are caught will face a £80 fine. We’ve also asked for officers to pay particular attention to roads where residents have reported problems.

However, we will push for more resources for Stoke Newington if we are elected on May 6th. We think this is necessary because the problem is getting worse with the growth in the number of so called ‘status dogs’ owned by irresponsible owners who fail to clean up after their animals.

If you spot an offender, remember you can report them directly to the Enforcement Team on 020 8356 4810.
