Dear resident,

We’ve set up this website to keep you up to date on what your Labour councillors are doing locally, how we’re addressing the issues you raise with us and also invite your views on what you want to see done in Stoke Newington. We also intend this blog to be a community information site – we will post details of meetings, events, campaigns and news from the Council.

It’s also an opportunity to celebrate Stoke Newington, and please do email us if you would like to list a restaurant, cafĂ©, bar, pub, shop or other local facility, in the directory we have started compiling.

As you may be aware there was recently a by-election in Stoke Newington Central, and Cllr Louisa Thomson has joined Cllrs Rita Krishna and Muttalip Unluer as your Labour representatives. The recent election result was a big vote of confidence in what Labour are doing locally – Louisa won with a 48% share of the vote, and a majority of 379 over the second placed candidate. Full results here.

The campaign gave us a renewed opportunity to meet and speak to a huge number of local residents in the ward. Many people commented on how much things have improved in Stoke Newington over the last few years – cleaner streets, compulsory recycling collections, crime falling, and decent homes improvements on the estates.

However, we know there are challenges that remain – particularly over community safety, ensuring that all flats and houses on our local estates benefit from improvements, and providing more activities locally for young people. We also want to continue to make our community cleaner and greener – supporting initiatives like Transition Town Stoke Newington, and ensuring that the Council continues to take the lead over more sustainable solutions locally.

As your local councillors we are committed to:
  • holding regular meetings and advice surgeries to hear your views and also provide you with up to date information on what the Council is doing in our area
  • responding to the issues you raise with us by either calling on you, phoning you or writing to let you now how we’ve taken up your problem
  • walking about the neighbourhood on a regular basis and reporting anything that we notice is wrong to local council officers
  • raising local concerns with the police to help make our community safer
  • working to improve houses and flats in the ward, making sure that local schools are of a high standard and improving community green spaces and facilities
We welcome comments from you on our work and want you to contact us with any issues or problems that you want us to take up on your behalf.

We look forward to hearing from you - you can find all our contact details here.

RIOTS IN HACKNEY

Like everyone we were shocked and saddened by the unrest and violence in Hackney on 8th August. We were relieved that the riots did not spread to Stoke Newington High Street, and Church Street, but our thoughts were very much with the local businesses elsewhere in Hackney whose property was damaged and residents who were placed in frightening situations beyond their control.

In the aftermath, a lot has been happening locally, and the strength of our community in Hackney has been evident – showing the real character of Hackney.

Immediately after the riots:

- all Safer Neighbourhood Teams in Hackney were working extended shifts, alongside the massive increases in police numbers across London

- Council street cleaners worked as soon as it was safe to clear the streets and most areas were clear by 5am the next morning. Volunteers turned up at the Town Hall the day after to help – but all the work had been done by then!

- CCTV footage is being analysed and a considerable number of arrests have been made

- You can read the statement Mayor Jules Pipe made after the riots here

Support for businesses:

- 15 businesses in hackney were affected by the riots and have been offered practical support and advice from the Council.

- The High Street Support Scheme has been set up by the Government, as well as the existing Business Rates Hardship Relief Scheme and the Council is working to ensure eligible businesses can access these.

- A collection fund was started for the Clarence Road convenience store – one of the shops badly affected who did not have insurance. Many people have given generously to this fund.

HCVS organised an emergency meeting a few days after the riots to consider a community response to the disorder. This was attended by the Mayor, Chief Executive, councillors, the Borough Commander, 50 community leaders, frontline workers and residents. The agreed actions for community engagement and involvement are online here, and are currently being taken forward by the Council, local partners and the voluntary sector.

The riots will also be discussed at this month’s Full Council and we will update you next month on the outcome of this. In the meantime, please do get in touch with us if you have any questions or issues you’d like to raise about what happening in Hackney.

WILMER PLACE DEVELOPMENT

We continue to be very involved in the issues surrounding the proposed Wilmer Place development. As many of you will be aware, the owner of the private car park and live work units on Wilmer Place has drawn up plans for a new development on the site. These involve a large new Sainsbury’s store, new flats and an underground car park. At the time of writing – no planning application has been submitted.

Our position remains the same – we do not support the development as it currently stands, and feel that the developer is failing to address the concerns of residents about the impact of the development on the local area.

Over the summer, we wrote an open letter to the developer and Sainsbury’s calling on him to attend a public meeting with residents to discuss his plans in more detail. Since the drop in sessions in July there has been no engagement with the local community and we feel the consultation has been inadequate. Our letter also summarises the main planning concerns – you can read it online here.

The developer responded by saying he was not willing to attend a public meeting. We are keeping up the pressure (see our response here) as we feel that he needs to be accountable to local residents.

We have also been looking into more of the planning concerns around the development and have published a number of guides and further explanation on our blog before the summer:

- the role of councillors in the planning process here

- Land use on Wilmer Place here

- Environmental Impact Assessments here

- The Conservation Area here

Remember to check Stokey Local for updates too.

BROOKE ROAD 20MPH CONSULTATION

A new 20mph zone is being proposed for the Brooke Road area – the deadline for comments is 23rd September and the survey can be accessed online here.

KYNASTON GARDENS

We helped to organise another successful bike event in Kynaston Gardens last week. Around 30 local residents had their bikes security tagged and checked for free by Donut Kids bike club.

The Friends of Kynaston Gardens group met last week too – as we’ve reported before, the group have been successful in their bid to Community Spaces and have been awarded £50,000 to do up the Gardens. Further applications have also gone in for some additional money for the project, and the outcome of this will be known by the end of next month.

At the moment, the estimate is that the improvement works will be complete by next Spring. In the meantime there are lots of exciting plans being discussed on possible events and community activities in the Gardens. If you want to get involved, email kynastongardens@gmail.com.

GRANTS DEADLINE

The deadline for the Council's Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) Grants Programme is 22nd September.

Applications are now being invited for the Council's 2012/13 programme. Organisations can bid for Small Grants (up to £7,000), Holiday Playscheme Grants (up to £10,000) and Main Grants (up to £50,000).

Organisations receiving funding under this programme have demonstrated how their projects and programmes deliver one or more of the seven objectives in Hackney's Sustainable Community Strategy.

More information about the grants and application process is online here.

BIODIVERSITY CONSULTATION

The Council’s Biodiversity Action Plan is currently being consulted on.

This sets out how the Council proposes to protect and enhance its wildlife over the next six years. You can comment on the Plan until 24th October and all the consultation documents are online here.

FAIRER CHARGING

There is currently a consultation underway on the Council’s fairer charging policy for care services for older and disabled people. The proposed changes may affect people who are currently assessed for a charge for services including; care at home, personal care or using day centres.

The Council wants to hear from people who may be directly affected by the proposals including service users and their carers, and a broad range of people with an interest in this policy including service providers, partners and residents.

The consultation is open until 10th October and the documents are online here.

About your Labour councillors

Stoke Newington Central ward is represented by three Labour councillors: Cllr Susan Fajana-Thomas, Cllr Rita Krishna and Cllr Louisa Thomson who were elected to represent this ward in the local elections on 6th May 2010.

Cllr Rita Krishna
Rita Krishna has been a Labour Councillor for Stoke Newington Central Ward since 2002. Aged 50, Rita has lived in the ward on Princess May Road for over twenty years.

S
ince 2005 she has worked full-time as Hackney Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services. During this time she has helped oversee a period of dramatic improvement in Hackney schools, with GCSE results now at the national average, popular new City Academies opening and other schools rebuilt through Building Schools for the Future. She has also ensured high standards of social care for vulnerable children in Hackney. Rita is also a Board Member of The Learning Trust, Hackney Community College, and the City Academy Hackney.

Locally in the ward, Rita’s achievements include campaigning with residents to stop the application for a pole dancing establishment locally, stopping the license application for 35-39 Stoke Newington High Street so it did not become another late night bar, and securing the section 106 money from the development at 2-26 Somerford Grove for use on the local estate and the local school (the money was at risk because of a complex land transfer planning matter).

Cllr Louisa Thomson

Louisa Thomson has been a Labour Councillor for Stoke Newington Central Ward since winning a stunning by-election victory in January 2009.

Louisa is 30. She has lived in Hackney for seven years and works as a youth policy researcher. Louisa’s achievements include securing Decent Homes and wider block improvements for Morris Blitz Court after years of neglect and campaigning for the improvement of Kynaston Gardens – now being led by a community group who are applying for funding to bring it back into use.

Louisa’s community activity includes:

  • School Governor at Princess May Primary School (in SNC) – playing a role in helping to publicise the school in the local community, and improve its links with other organisations and activities in Stoke Newington.
  • Serving on the Management Board of the Old Fire Station – working to sort out a proper lease for the group.
  • Police Community Advisory Panel member.

Cllr Susan Fajana-Thomas

Susan is 46 and has two children. She lives in Stoke Newington with her family for seventeen years. She works with an inner London Community Police Engagement Group, which centres around helping to provide a forum in which local people can engage the Police.

Susan has been extremely active in the local community. Susan is a School Governor at Grasmere Primary School on Albion Road. She has a long standing commitment to decent and well managed housing for people living in social housing and was the Chair of her estate Tenants and Residents Association for many years.

She is the Vice Chair of Stoke Newington Housing Neighbourhood Panel and helped to to galvanise residents' support for Hackney Homes to achieve 2 star status. She is the Chair of Howard Road Resource Centre Management Committee, a centre that provides internet access and various well-being activities for people living in social housing in the area.

Susan’s top priorities are decent housing, improving local schools, and support for families and children.

Jules Pipe is the elected Labour Mayor for Hackney. Jules was elected in 2002, and is the political leader of the Council, overseeing the Budget and all council services. You can read more about Jules' priorities for Hackney here and get in touch with the Mayor here.

Diane Abbott is the Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington and therefore represents Stoke Newington Central ward residents at Westminster. You can contact her about any issue, especially if it concerns national government policy. Diane can help you directly with immigration and asylum cases, problems with tax credits, and any other matter relating to central government. You can contact her by writing to Diane Abbott MP, House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA, or on 0207 219 4426 or visit her website.

Jennette Arnold is North East London's representative on the London Assembly. If you have problems with Transport for London, the Metropolitan Police, the Fire Service, or any London-wide issue she might be able to help you. Jennette is Chair of the Assembly. Find out more about her work here or contact her on jennette.arnold@london.gov.uk.
