20mph zones save lives
Hackney Mayor Jules Pipe's decision to introduce 20mph speed limits on local streets has been proven to be a life saver.
Researchers have found that 20mph zones cut road injuries by a huge 40%.
The 20mph zones are particularly useful in saving young children from death and injury, according to researchers from the University of London. Reductions are greatest for younger children (aged up to 11 years), and higher for the category of killed or seriously injured casualties than for those suffering minor injuries. More information about the research is here.
In Stoke Newington Central, the latest 20mph zone in the Shacklewell area was consulted on in the autumn after a strong campaign from residents. Your local councillors have also lobbied hard for the area around Darville/Bayston/Leswin Road to be consulted on in the next financial year - 2010/11.
