Fairtrade borough success

Good news that Hackney has retained its Fairtrade Borough status. There are five goals that have to be met in order for this to happen:
  • Local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and agrees to serve Fairtrade products (for example, in meetings, offices and canteens)
  • A range of Fairtrade products are readily available in the area's retail outlets (shops, supermarkets, newsagents, and petrol stations) and served in local catering outlets (cafes, restaurants, pubs)
  • Local workplaces and community organisations support Fairtrade and use Fairtrade products wherever possible
  • Media coverage and events raise awareness and understanding of Fairtrade across the community.
  • A local Fairtrade steering group is convened to ensure the Fairtrade Borough status campaign continues to develop and gain new support
Hackney passed with flying colours which means that we have Fairtrade status until 2011. Congratulations to Cllr Ian Rathbone in particular who has been behind Hackney's success in this campaign. More information on what Hackney is doing on Fairtrade here.
